Ubuntu Manpage Repository Updates!
September 16, 2008
I wrote a little over a week ago to announce the Ubuntu Manpage Repository. I must say that the response has been tremendous, thanks to some 600+ Diggs and a slew of responses on the Ubuntu-Devel mailing list.
I received a number of great suggestions for improving the interface and user experience. Some of the new features now available on manpages.ubuntu.com:
- A real index, with an explanation of navigation and other useful links
- A browser search plug-in (click “install search engine plugin” on the main page)
- A table of contents for each manpage, shown on the far right of the screen
- A more human-readable Arial font for the manpage text (rather than monospace)
- Support for manpages which are actually symbolically linked into place
- Links to all English manpages under en/
I’m still working on:
- Improving support for other, non-English languages
- Improving the search
- Enhancing man itself to retrieve missing manpages via wget/curl
If you have more suggestions, please file a bug in Lauchpad against the ubuntu-manpage-repository project.
